Solar Rebate WA

Western Australia is a solar panel paradise! About 40% of homes in WA have rooftop solar already. Why is solar in WA so great?

  • There is an abundance of sunshine; WA has one of the highest levels of solar radiation in Australia.
  • The state has historically faced higher electricity prices compared to the eastern states.
  • WA usually falls into the mid-range to lower end of solar prices per watt compared to other states.

On this page we will help you:

  • Understand every available solar rebate in WA
  • Get the best deal in WA on your solar system
  • Know how much you can earn from Synergy and Horizon’s solar Feed-in Tariffs
  • Find out about the state’s EV rebate, known as the ZEV rebate.

This is the only solar rebate resource WA homeowners need. Let’s go!

State Government Solar Rebate WA

Although there is no State Government funded solar rebate in WA, you can access the Federal Government’s Small-scale Technology Certificates incentive (STCs).

(While technically an “incentive” and not a “rebate”) The Federal “solar rebate” in WA means homeowners save a big chunk on the upfront cost of installing a solar system.

Read below to find out more…

Federal Government Solar Rebate WA - STCs

The Small Scale Technology Certificate program (known as STCs) is the Australian Federal Government solar rebate WA homeowners get when they install.

Functionally, it’s an upfront discount on your solar system. That means no big upfront cost and no waiting to get your money back!

The solar rebate you receive depends on a few things, including the size of the system you install and which one of the STC ‘zones’ that you live in.

Because WA is such a huge state it crosses all 4 of the STC zones.

The majority of West Australians live in zone 3. You can check which zone your postcode falls under here.

Here is an example of the STC solar rebate for Perth, Mandurah, Rockingham, Kalgoorlie, Dunsborough, Margaret River, Denmark, Albany, and Busselton:

Estimated STC solar rebate in WA for zone 3. The number of STCs rewarded reduces every year, so get in quick!

Visit our main Australian Solar Rebates and Incentives page for more info on STCs and solar rebates in WA.

Given the complexity around creating and selling STCs, it’s common that you “assign” the STCs to your solar system installer, and they just apply a discount to what they charge you for your solar system.

Generally, advertised prices for solar systems will include the solar rebate in WA, so check the fine print!

WA Solar Rebate Calculator - STCs

By now you’ll know that when you get solar in WA, the solar rebate provided by the Federal Government should apply to you. Next you probably want to calculate your discount to check if solar is worth it from your home.

Jump on over to our Solar Calculator to instantly work out the solar rebate each WA postcode can expect, plus heaps more.

Just enter your postcode to predict your:

  • STC discount (your “solar rebate’)
  • Payback period on your system
  • Savings on your electricity bill with solar

In WA, the solar rebate changes a bit based on where you live and the size of your system, so get easy to understand advice on how much you can save now!

Solar Rebates in WA - Feed-in Tariffs

Other than the Federal solar rebate, in WA you should also factor in the credit on your Synergy or Horizon Power bill you can get for the excess solar electricity you don’t need that’s instead export to the grid. This credit is called a feed-in-tariff (FiT).

The excess electricity your system produces that you don’t need isn’t wasted. It flows into the grid and over to your neighbours home or the local shops so they can make use of it, with you getting paid in the process.

In WA, the FiT rate is set by the WA State Government through the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme or DEBS (click here to learn more).

IMPORTANT: Under DEBS you’re only eligible to receive a FiT on a solar system with generating capacity between 500W and 5kW. However, a 6.6kW solar PV system with 5kW inverter is accepted as having a generating capacity of 5kW.

Current WA solar feed-in tariffs are in the table below (but double check each Synergy or Horizon Power’s website for specific T&Cs):

WA Solar Rebate Changes - Feed-in Tariff Restructure

Back in 2020, WA solar rebate changes took place affecting the FiT value.

If you installed your solar system before 7th September 2020:

You would have been placed on the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme (REBS) which gave you a flat rate of 7.13c per kWh that you exported no matter what time of the day.

If you installed your solar system after 7th September 2020:

You would have been placed on the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS) which is

From 1 July 2022:

  • Electricity net exported at peak times between 3pm and 9pm will earn you 10c/kWh;
  • Electricity net exported at all other times will earn you 2.0c/kWh for Synergy and 3.0c/kWh for Horizon Power.

Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Rebate

The ZEV rebate is the WA government’s financial incentive to encourage the purchase of zero emission vehicles.

The ZEV rebate scheme provides a $3,500 rebate after purchasing an eligible vehicle and submitting an application form to the Department of Transport (DoT).

Applications for the rebate will be accepted until midnight, Saturday 10 May 2025.

FAQs - Solar Rebate WA

While there is no state specific solar rebate for WA, the Federal STC incentive you receive when you install your system makes solar affordable for many homes.

While there is no state specific solar rebate in WA you can still access the Federal STC incentive to receive an upfront discount on your install. The amount you’ll receive depends on:

  • Your STC zone
  • Your system size
  • The year you install

Click here to use our Solar Calculator to find out your STC rebate in seconds.

The State Government may not offer WA a solar rebate like other states, but that’s offset by the low price per watt that you’ll pay on your system and all the extra sunshine WA gets throughout the year.

Eligibility for the Federal STC solar rebate in WA is the same as every other state. As long as you’re installing a system no larger than 100kW you’re good to go – most homes nowadays install a system mixed between 6kW and 10kW.

PLUS as long as you install a system with a solar inverter 5kW or less you’ll receive a FiT from Synergy or Horizon Power.

The 2020 WA solar rebate changes you might have heard about refer to the WA State Government’s move away from a flat rate feed-in tariff under the Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme (REBS) of to a variable rate under the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS).

This change to the solar rebate means WA homeowners are encouraged to adopt green energy usage habits that are good for the grid and good for their hip pocket. Click here to see the new Horizon Power and Synergy feed in tariffs .

There isn’t a WA solar rebate for renters offered by the State Government like there are in some other states.

However, although renters can’t directly access the Federal STC solar rebate in WA you can speak to your landlord to see if they will consider an arrangement where they install the system and you contribute to the cost, knowing you’ll get the savings on your electricity bill.

The best next step is to speak to your landlord and send them this link to get 3 solar quotes to find out the cost to install at your home.

Or email us copying your landlord, to say that they have requested you arrange the quotes on their behalf.

The DEBS FiT rate is designed to reflect the cost of electricity at the time of the day you’re exporting to the grid.

You’ll receive a higher rate for the electricity you export during the late afternoon and evening when demand is high (and therefore the wholesale cost is highest) than if you were to export it during the middle of the day when they are both lower.

This change initially caused some uncertainty from people planning to install solar, who were concerned that the WA solar rebate changes would reduce their savings from solar. However, the difference in ROI between REBS and DEBS is minimal – solar is still a great investment for most Western Australian homes.
