If Western Australia’s Liberal Party takes the State election next month, they are poised to continue their support of renewable energy, with a yet to be introduced rebate for businesses.
The rebate is set to benefit businesses that install “large” solar systems and is valued up to $40,000.
If re-elected, the Liberal Party will run the 50MW program for three years unless the cap is reached earlier than that. This would commence on July 1 this year and could benefit up to 500 rooftop systems.
The original funding will be sourced from a consolidated account, totaling $20 million. The partial sale of Western Power will help extend the rebate and contribute an additional $20 million.
WA Premiere Colin Barnett is in favour of the scheme, calling it an effective cost saving measure.
While the Opposition leader, Mark McGowan, is publicly opposed to the sale of Western Power to “provide grants to multinational corporations to put in place solar panels”.
Mr. McGowan believes the companies should fully pay for them themselves.
Western Australian businesses have been slow to build business cases for installing solar, compared to the other states and help Australia reach its goal of 23.5 % renewable by 2030.
Mike Nahan, Energy Minister, believes that the Liberal Party has delivered the most renewable energy during their state leadership than all combined previous WA governments.
Whether the Liberals continue their strong support of renewable energy or another government is tasked with promoting solar power, the facts are clearer than ever for businesses in WA and all over Australia: Solar will business save money on their rising electricity costs and sell back any unused power back to their local grid.
