The Australian Federal Labor Government has announced the Cheaper Home Batteries Program rebate.
The solar battery rebate will be administered under the current Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) which provides the existing STC incentive, often called the “solar rebate”.
The solar battery rebate covers around 30% to 70% of the cost of the battery.
Details are:
- Open to households, small businesses, strata schemes and community groups
- Up to $300 per kWh of battery capacity to a maximum of 50kWh (although the battery can be up to 100kWh)
- Eligible batteries can be added to existing solar systems
- On-grid and Off-grid battery systems are eligible
- Batteries must be “Virtual Power Plant (VPP) ready”
- Works with and on top of existing State government battery rebate schemes
- Battery systems already ordered and installed between 6th April 2025 and 1st July 2025 can access the subsidy, as long as the systems are not switched on before 1st July 2025
- The Australian Federal battery rebate will reduce over time
The federal Liberal Party is expected to announce its own solar battery rebate in the coming weeks.
